Yes, it’s that time of year again.
School is starting here at home. For this school year, it is just one student. Melanie is entering 6th grade.
Having had Melanie in our mid-40’s, it is surprising to me still that my baby is now 10 and starting sixth grade! The years just picked up and ran away with us and yet each day has been full and busy.
This year being no exception with our big move to New York!
What kind of school year will she have?
Only God knows at this point but the school year I have planned for us is gentle, educational and fun.
If teaching for over 18 years has taught me anything it is that children learn like sponges all throughout their day. We don’t need a lot of textbooks for each subject nor a strict set of lessons.
Melanie will continue this year with the math course I found her last year. CTCMath was developed by a homeschool father of 10 in New Zealand. The lessons aren’t very long but the concepts are taught extremely well and we both have learned much already from this course.
Then, I’ve planned to keep reading to her and having her read on her own to find out her comprehension. We have to study history and the Notgrass family never disappoints with their books. This year we will start with the beginning of the world and meander our way through until present day. I plan on taking a few years with a one year course in order for us to enjoy it, grasp it and get the history of our world cemented in our brains.
Of course, she still needs a spelling class and this year we are adding in a Friday review of the Books of the Bible along with their spelling! I want my children to be prepared practically as well as spiritually. We have English (thanks Mom for a great course) and Geography and this year’s Science will cover our health!
I think all in all we will have a good year.
There will be days but there will also be days! By this I mean, we may struggle but we will triumph, too and smile over our victories.
She is taking up her violin again, too, starting today and though she isn’t as thrilled anymore about the violin, we want her to use her instrument for God. I think once she can start playing at church more regularly she will enjoy it more. Purpose in life goes a long way to peace, happiness and contentment. Her teacher is the best we know. She lives in Iowa and has now taught Emilie, Stephanie and Melanie string instruments! I’m just grateful for virtual classes these days!
So may the 6th year but a year of learning not only for Melanie but for her teacher as well. May we both dedicate this time of her life to learning about the world around her, the history of the world she is growing up in and how to grow spiritually as she progresses to her future world.
