What A Lovely Name Is Jesus

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow…” Philippians 2:9, 10

Jesus, He has so many names that come to us through His Word.  So many wonderful ways to describe Him and give us hope for this life and the life to come.

This may be one of my favorite names because no matter how often I fail my God, Jesus is standing between us and a holy God to advocate for us. His blood shed for me – my past, present and future sins – to have full forgiveness and access to the throne of God. “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:” (I John 2:1)

Humbled for a season, to receive a name
From the lips of sinners unto whom He came,
Faithfully He bore it spotless to the last,
Brought it back victorious when from death He passed.

John 1:3 says, “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” Aren’t you glad He is known as Creator? Without Him, I’d not be here today. Without Him, my husband and children wouldn’t be here. We wouldn’t have the beautiful flowers and trees to look at or the changing of the seasons.  His world is perfect and all He did to bring it together was use His voice.

At His voice creation sprang at once to sight,
All the angel faces, all the hosts of light,
Thrones and wide dominions, stars upon their way,
All the heav’nly orders, in their great array.

Herein lays another wonderful name of Jesus, Immanuel.  Isaiah 7:14 gives us a glimpse by saying, “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”  Immanuel means, “God with us”.

This name was again repeated in Matthew 1 when an angel appeared unto Joseph and shared with him the wonderful message about his espoused wife, Mary. She would carry the Son of God. What an honor and what a name – Immanuel. God with us! God came down in the form of man, as a baby to become the Savior of the world thus securing us a home in heaven.   What a triumphant thought.

Bore it up triumphant with its human light,
Through all ranks of creatures, to the central height.
To the throne of Godhead, to the Father’s breast;
Filled it with the glory of that perfect rest.

Jesus came to redeem us but the story wasn’t one that ended with Him dying on the cross. He redeemed us and our Redeemer lives on to show us He conquered death as we will someday! Job knew this and said in Job 19:25, “For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:” My Redeemer lived, died and arose that early Sunday morning so that I could know eternal peace.

Brothers, this Lord Jesus shall return again,
With His Father’s glory, with His angel train;
For all wreaths of empire meet upon His brow,
And our hearts confess Him King of glory now.

Whatever His name or however we describe Him, one day everyone will bow before Him.

At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow,
Every tongue confess Him King of glory now;
’Tis the Father’s pleasure we should call Him Lord,
Who from the beginning was the mighty Word.
