What Activities are keeping you healthy?

Exercise is an important component of health and wellness in many chronic conditions.

Activities are so important to our health. When I am active, not only am I not concentrating on the pain levels but I am many times relieving said pain levels. There are very good exercises for me and some that are totally off limits. Do you suffer from chronic pain? What activities suit you best? “For bodily exercise profiteth little:…” I Timothy 4:8 is a fun verse when you want to get out of exercise. I use it here a bit “tongue in cheek” because we DO need to be physically active to keep our earthly bodies in tip top shape. However, there is always a balance in life. Balance in physical exercise to the degree of our health. Do you wake up feeling low energy? Is your energy level at an all time low? As a chronic illness sufferer, I many times wake up like this. I just don’t want to get out of bed. However, as I live in the moment (praying often for strength for that first step), I remind myself that today is a new day with new activities and if I get moving, I’ll feel better.  I don’t jump out of bed anymore, but I can get up and be glad for another day. “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24) What activities are good for my health (I realize what’s good for me might not be good for you. Check with your doctor before you start any new exercise and remember to start slow and build up)? Some activities are not exercise per se but they build up the heart, the mind and the body in different ways. I used to love hiking and walking but now I have a hard time getting out of my house to walk because my hEDS has progressed to where my hips give out if I walk far or my knees buckle. God blessed us in Florida with a new home in 2022, but it meant leaving the rental that had a pool and I knew I was going to miss that. The activity of swimming is the best activity for patients like me. It is so easy on the joints and when I’m in the water I don’t feel the pain.  We were able to get a brand new 27′ round above ground for half price. Then He found us a brand new heat pump so I could start swimming right away in the pool. Trust me when I say it does get chilly in Florida and there are some months you want to step away from a pool that isn’t heated. On top of this we were able to install a dome to not only keep the direct sunlight off us but keep the bugs and leaves out of the pool. You can find the dome company we used here.  We love ours!  Now I swim in a heated pool with my kids while watching the forest that is on the back of our property. It’s been heaven sent! This week as we continue to live in the moment, let us take some moments for some spiritual and physical activities in our lives. This will lift our spirits and the spirits of those around us.  You can find more information about Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome here.
