I just wanted to show you a simple way to not only teach the alphabet to your little ones but also teach verses and songs to them. Rod & Staff have the best alphabet flash cards, I think! You can find them here.
Why do we learn to read? We learn to read in order to read God’s Word (and hide it in our hearts).
“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Psalm 119:11
The best way to teach your child to hide God’s Word in their hearts is to have them memorize it! I love this idea. Not only are you going to teach your child one verse per letter of the alphabet but why not take it a step farther and teach them one song per letter of the alphabet, too!
I have made up a list here where each song and verse starts with the corresponding letter. It was fun and not that hard and you could come up with your own ways. I thought another way to memorize Scripture is to take the picture corresponding with the letter (apple is with A) and finding a verse with that word in it. Psalm 17:8 – “Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,” Isn’t this fun? Let me know what you think and if you use this method how did it go!
I have learned over the years to mold my homeschooling into teaching that is fun at times, geared to each child’s own needs and fairly easy on the teacher. Our lives are busy as moms so why not find ways to keep schooling simple and meaningful. When you teach a child to read, not only will he read God’s Word but you have opened the world to him. Reading IS an education in and of itself!
“Till I come, give attendance to reading,” I Timothy 4:13
