Today’s post is from my newest devotional book that you can find on Amazon. I love to write short devotionals not only for you but to encourage myself as well. One of my goals in life is to bring joy to others.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart:” Psalm 139:13
The first thing we need to understand as a child is that we have sinned. When God created Adam & Eve and placed them in the Garden of Eden, they were perfect without sin. But they did not stay that way. Eve was tempted by the serpent and she ate of the forbidden tree. She gave it to Adam and he ate. They sinned. They disobeyed God. God had to punish them by taking them out of the garden and they spent their lives in hard toil, sin and eventually death. But He didn’t leave them without hope, though.
God sent His Son, Jesus to earth hundreds of years later to die on the cross for our sins and to rescue us from eternal fires in hell. Romans 5:8 says, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Have you searched your heart? Do you see your sins? Have you asked Jesus to forgive you your sins and cleanse your heart? This song asks us to look into our heart, see our sins and ask God to cleanse us from them.
Search me, O God, and know my heart today;
Try me, O Savior, know my thoughts, I pray.
See if there be some wicked way in me;
Cleanse me from every sin and set me free.
Mr. Orr wrote these words for a revival meeting in the early 1900’s in New Zealand. It was true way back then and it is still true today. Our hearts need to be pure in front of God and we need to ask God to search out our sin, show us our sin and then cleanse us from our sins. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (I John 1:9) This cleansing brings peace back into our lives and restores fellowship with Him.
Search your heart and find the sin hidden there. Ask God to cleanse you and set you free from the guilt and shame of your sin.
“…let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit…” II Corinthians 7:1
