“Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.” Psalm 40:5
The song that came right away to my mind was one called, “The Love of God”. What a powerful song and I just love this verse:
Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made;
Were every tree on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry,
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.
I recently learned that this verse was an ancient poem, Aramaic. It was also discovered scratched (translated into English) onto the wall of a cell in an insane asylum. Wow! A patient in this place knew the song. It was stuck in their minds and they maybe even scratched it on the wall to anchor themselves to the words and comfort themselves in the love of God.
The author of the song, Frederick Lehman (1868-1953), wrote the other two verses. He incorporated this verse into his song when someone passed it along to him. Frederick and his daughter had just recently lost their whole business. He was selling oranges in California to make ends meet. Think of the words of this verse and how he must have seen the power and vastness of the ocean and the skies above.
God’s love is strong, powerful and enduring. It will never end and it is so vast that He included the whole of mankind in His plan of redemption. He sent His Son to die for us. The humility that this inspires and the joy that it brings to know that, “for God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
His vast love included you and you will never be forgotten or unloved.
