Work While It Is Day, The Night Cometh

“I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.” John 9:4

Work is a part of our lives.  We cannot eat if we do not work.  We work physically to provide for our daily needs.  Working spiritually is much the same in that we must labor for the Lord. We labor if we are going to be spiritually fed, growing as Christians and having a peace in our hearts.  When we are spiritually working to see souls saved, lives changed and people filled with joy, it is not all in our own strength.

Philippians 2:13 says, “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”  This is a type of work we never retire from.  We must work until we are graduated into Heaven because souls are lost.  People are in despair and need to be given hope.  When this life ends, hope is lost for those not saved.  If we keep that sobering thought in mind we will work diligently for God.

Work till the last beam fadeth,
Fadeth to shine no more;
Work, while the night is darkening,
When man’s work is o’er.

Anne Coghill had an interesting life as she and her parents left England in 1857 and moved to Canada.  They settled first in Quebec and later in Ontario where she and her sisters had a school for girls.  As an adult she moved back to England to be a governess, later marrying a wealthy merchant.  She has several hymns that she wrote as well as some books.

She stayed busy with her writings as she used them to testify of her Lord.  When you read her books or listen to her hymns you can see a woman who wanted to live for God.  She worked diligently for Him.  “For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” (I Corinthians 3:9)

Make it your goal to not give up in serving God, not even when you’re older and retired from physical labor.

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” I Corinthians 15:58
