“…every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.” Matthew 12:36
My daughter, Stephanie wrote this devotional when she was just 14. Her insight is spot on when she explains to us how words do matter.
Words are important. It’s how we say “I love you” or “I’m sorry”. It’s how we settle arguments or also sometimes create them. We use words to learn about other things and people. When we speak it can harm or help. It can punish or praise. It can ruin or reward and it can lose or love. The best words ones are in the Bible. Or you could say the best “Word” is in the Bible! John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
A few other definitions of “the Word” would be as follows.
It is pure: Proverbs 30:5, “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.” Psalms 12:6, “The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.”
Scatter kind words all around you;
Some heart in its sorrow will stay:
And catching the bright beaming treasures,
Find comfort for many a day.
It is eternal: Matthew 24:35, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” Isaiah 40:8. “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”
Scatter kind words by the wayside,
Nor fancy your labor in vain;
They come like the beautiful sunlight;
They fall and they cheer like the rain.
It is a light: Psalms 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Scatter kind words to the lonely,
The friendless, the weak and oppressed;
Go scatter kind words to the erring;
In God shall your labor be blest.
It is truth: John 17:17, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
Scatter kind words all around you;
Perchance, when your mission is o’er,
The seed you have dropped in a moment
May bloom on eternity’s shore.
We need to fashion or model our ways after the way Jesus spoke. If He is the Word then following Him should be simple. But that doesn’t mean it will be easy. And this verse sums it all up: Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Let us scatter words of kindness throughout our day, today.
Then scatter kind words;
They will never be lost;
Remember your mission below;
Scatter kind words,
Scatter kind words,
Wherever, wherever you go.
