Whose Side Are You On?

We all end up choosing a side. People are always wanting to know, Pepsi or Coke? Or they ask Hershey or Cadbury? Do you like basketball or football? We make choices daily. In our spiritual world there are two choices only. Are we on God’s side or the world’s?

I have loved this song since I first started playing it on the piano at the age of 12. It is not only majestic in the tune but the words give so much to think about.

Frances Havergal has contributed many hymns to our hymnal with probably the most famous one being, “Take My Life”.  You can read more about her life here.

But this song about choosing sides has some great biblical truths in it and as a clergyman’s daughter, she probably heard a lot of Bible and thus it influenced her writings.

This song was written just two years before her death (she was 41) and was originally titled, “Home Missions”. This puts great perspective on the song. One of the verses she based the song on is found in I Chronicles 12:18, “Thine are we, David, and on thy side.”

However the first line came from Moses in Exodus 32:26 when he asked, “Who is on the Lord’s side? let him come unto me.“

These are both thought provoking verses from God’s Word and some we should ponder on as we march through life. So can I ask? What side are you on?

Here’s a verse we don’t normally sing but is still just as great!

Chosen to be soldiers, in an alien land, Chosen, called, and faithful, for our Captain’s band; In the service royal, let us not grow cold, Let us be right loyal, noble, true and bold. Master, wilt Thou keep us, by Thy grace divine, Always on the Lord’s side—Savior, always Thine!
