Spring Goals

I have always said fall is my favorite season but there is something about the smell of spring and the thought of little buds waking up to poke through the dirt that gets me smiling. Doesn’t it bring such happiness and a smile to your face? Ecc. 3:1,2 says, “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant,…” God gave us new beginnings and newness of life just like He gives us every spring.

Spring is the best time to make a list and set goals. I have a few things I’d like to get done this season not the least of which is purging and cleaning out each closet. It seems like a daunting task but the freshness of spring helps to push me to feel renewed and energized for cleaning! No wonder they call it “spring cleaning”.

Goal #1 – Spring cleaning

Generally it makes me worn out to even say the words but I’m trying to remind myself that cleaning out the closets and getting the kids to help clean windows (they did that this weekend with their dad) and such is well worth the fresh clean feeling! That same feeling of clean can be said of our hearts when they are right with God. David is such an inspiration to me because although he failed his God time and again, he knew God would forgive and cleanse. Look what David says in Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” God will cleanse and purify my heart, too when I call on Him.

Goal #2 – Spring tune up

Another thing I do in the spring is making sure my health is in order. Life needs some tuning sometimes and keeping our health fine tuned helps us live a richer and fuller life. God wants us to be at our best in order to praise and serve Him. He gave us our bodies and we need to make sure people know how much we appreciate them by taking care of them. I Cor. 6:19, “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?”

Goal #3 – Spring dancing

What? Dancing? Why sure! We can be joyful and dance as we step into spring and thank God for the beauty of His earth. I love how Psalm 149:3 tells us how to praise our God! “Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.” Spring through your day with your feet dancing in joyfulness to our great God and Savior.

Goal #4 – Spring Planting

Oh the fresh smell of turned dirt and the look of the wiggly worms as we start getting a garden ready and flowers planted. I have to admit that I do not have much of a green thumb but my daughter does and I walk behind her and enjoy the fruit of her labors. I have many precious memories of watching her work in the garden – sometimes alone and sometimes with Mellie. With just the bit I have done and the little I have put into my outdoor flowers, I love the satisfaction of planting the seeds and seeing them grow. We can do this in our personal lives as well as we plant the seeds of the gospel and watch relationships grow. I Cor. 3:6,7 reminds us that we do our small part and God increases. “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.  So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.”

Goal #5 – Spring Joy

My joy comes from the Lord but also in WHO He has given me. I have some wonderful people in my life and this spring I plan to enjoy them all as we get out and play in the sun and explore some new adventures. How will you be enjoying your spring? God has given us richly all things to enjoy as it says in I Timothy 6:17 so how can you NOT have spring joy or any season joy when we serve such a great God? I can’t wait to start my spring joy!

And whatever I love most about spring – whatever happens THIS spring – I can still sing, “It Is Well With My Soul”. Enjoy!
