“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
I wanted to sleep in today. I never sleep in past 7am. But it’s Saturday which means I allow myself to relax and just putter along with things at home.
Yes, I know. I spend most of my time at home but today means no school lessons to get a 10 year old interested in. It means I can sew if I’d like. I think Saturdays have turned into a busier day than Monday through Friday thanks to our busy work weeks.
What do Saturdays mean to me?
Saturdays mean preparing for Sunday. Full stop! Why? Sunday is a busy day in this household as we have the opportunity to not only serve our church family in music at church but to be challenged in God’s Word for the week. Sundays mean that we have the great possibility of seeing our church family. It is a time to spend the afternoon with our busy children. We always say, too, Sundays are for “Baptist naps.” While this doesn’t always happen, it’s okay because we know we are serving our God.
How do I prepare on Saturday?
I relax. Full stop! I make sure that my family has their clothes ready (yes, I still iron). When I was in charge of the kitchen, I would prepare as much for the Sunday meal on Saturday as I could. My daughter now cooks for us so she does her thing. I am BIG on not going out of my house after 3pm and I make sure Mellie (my 10 year old) and I shower in the evening early and go to bed early.
But why?
Proverbs 12:25 says, “Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.” If your heart is heavy, prepare today to be in church tomorrow. I know that at our church, we always have a lot from God’s Word to make us glad.
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91 is probably one of my favorite chapters in Psalms. Verse one does not disappoint. When we dwell close to God, our peace will radiate to others. We can find peace through personal Bible study but we need more. Finding peace through the preaching of God’s Word and singing in worship to Him is also needed.

So now you can understand why I relax Saturday. Many people take days to prepare for important events. They prepare for events that matter to them. Sundays matter to me. Today I will relax!
