Rejoice Today! The Lord IS King!

“Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.” I Chronicles 29:11

Do we need a reminder of WHO is in control of the universe?  I know I did this week as we mourned the passing of a godly man.  So many times I wanted to ask the question, why.  God is in control.  Our finite minds cannot comprehend the whys but we know the Who.  We know that God will make things right and all things are done according to His purpose.  “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

What then should be our response?  Charles Wesley, born in the early 1700’s, wrote many beautiful hymns for us.  Some were born out of his experiences and how he dealt with them.  He suffered childhood illnesses, financial instabilities, a home burning down and so much more. And yet, he wrote song after song praising our God. We should sing like Charles Wesley did these words.

Rejoice, the Lord is king!
Your Lord and king adore;
Mortals give thanks and sing,
And triumph evermore;
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

Jesus, the Savior, reigns,
The God of truth and love;
When He had purged our stains
He took His seat above;
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

His kingdom cannot fail,
He rules o’er earth and Heav’n,
The keys of death and hell
Are to our Jesus giv’n;
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

He sits at God’s right hand
Till all His foes submit,
And bow to His command,
And fall beneath His feet:
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

He all His foes shall quell,
Shall all our sins destroy,
And every bosom swell
With pure seraphic joy;
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice,
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

Rejoice in glorious hope!
Jesus the Judge shall come,
And take His servants up
To their eternal home.
We soon shall hear th’archangel’s voice;
The trump of God shall sound, rejoice!

I especially like that Charles knew that God would destroy (quell) all the evil in this world (foes).  Sin would be destroyed and pure joy given.  And in the end, no matter how difficult this world is, we know that Jesus will return to judge the earth, set up His kingdom and destroy sin and Satan.  If that isn’t a reason to rejoice, I don’t know what is!

“And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” Revelation 20:10
