Books To Read Through The Ages

I still believe one of the best gifts you can give your child is to teach them to read. Like music, it will take them through their life and is of use even when the knees get old and creaky and you can’t run that marathon anymore.

Reading takes us through our life. They take us through every stage of our lives from baby ward to the geriatric ward.

Here are some books your child can read today!

BABIES & TODDLERS

One of my favorite books to read to my smallest ones was this one, God Made Nighttime, Too. It is written in rhyme form and I would gladly read it (sometimes I sang it) to the child each night before bed. It settled them down and they knew it meant bedtime. Perfect for both of us. You can usually find a copy here.

CHILDREN 5 – 8

Whether they are reading on their own or with you, Anatole, the hard working mouse is always a winner.  Written by Eve Titus, this little guy with his partner, taste tests cheese for a cheese factory.  They go at night and leave notes of what needs to be added or taken away.  He and his wife have 3 sets of twins so they are busy.  This is a series of ten and none of these books will disappoint.  Find them here.

CHILDREN 9 – 12

Oh the years when they are waiting to be teens and they want to be. These are the years when they are truly expressing their independence and you pray they choose correctly the right way to go. Giving them solid books to read to not only develops their vocabulary, but also is a way for them to learn and yet in such a fun way.

One of my favorite authors for this age is Lois Lenski. She was an author and illustrator and has some cute books for little children but she also wrote about social issues of her time for older children. Strawberry Girl is about settlers in early America in Florida. She wrote about real Americans and real issues but from a child’s perspective. ThriftBooks has many of her books which you can find here.

TEENS

I have to recommend this Canadian author because your older children will love his series. Eric Wilson was a teacher and this pushed him to write stories for teens. He wrote this mystery series that follow siblings, Tom and Liz, as they solve mysteries around historic sites (there’s even one that takes place in Disneyland). He leaves you hanging at the end of each chapter so you know you’re going to keep reading them. You can read more about them here.

ADULTS

Version 1.0.0

At the end of the day when the children are in bed, you may need an uplifting book to read.  In the mornings, before they get up and you’re bracing yourself for a busy day, you may need some encouragement.  I have written three devotional books that come with a lot of Scripture and much joy for you to take with you through the day.  I just want to be a blessing to people and you can find them here.

The books here just scratch the surface of the world you can open to your children. Do you have a favorite book you read as a child? Feel free to comment below with them. I love to read and I love to collect books. Don’t you?
