Abraham’s Faith On Display

Do you have children? I have written a child’s book to help our children read God’s Word and know the basic stories even in it.  It is so important that we lead by example and show them that WE read the Bible.  But, we also need to get them into the habit of reading God’s Word daily.  I say habit because this is how it started for me as a child.  However, the more spiritually mature I became, the more I craved to not start my day without Him.  The spiritual strength I get just from the moments spent in His Word gives me strength to face the trials of life.  Your child needs this, too.

Here is one of the devotionals in the book you can find here.  Makes a great gift to give to your children who are readers.

Genesis 22:1-18

Abraham’s son was a promise fulfilled
God’s plan was progressing through him.
Isaac, his son, became a picture of Christ
When God asked for a faith that did not go dim.

Abraham and Sarah loved this child of theirs.  Isaac was just what they desired.  However, God wasn’t quite finished seeing the faith of Abraham and one day God told Abraham, “Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.” (Genesis 22:2)

God was testing the faith of Abraham.

Abraham started out with his son to sacrifice him (Isaac became a picture of Christ Who was sacrificed by His Father for our sins).  On the way, Isaac looked around and realized they had the wood and the fire and the altar would be prepared but what about the lamb?  Abraham trusted God completely and told Isaac, “God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering…” (Genesis 22:8)

He trusted God enough to know that God had a plan that He would fulfill.   They arrived at the mountain and I can only imagine what was going through Isaac’s mind when his father began to lay him on the altar.  I like to believe that Isaac did not panic but had complete trust in his father.  Abraham had been teaching him for years about the promises of God so Isaac knew that from his father and himself would come a mighty nation.

As they prepared the sacrifice, I’m sure it was with great joy that Abraham saw a ram caught in the thicket and heard the angel of the Lord saying, “Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.” (Genesis 22:12)  He had passed the test of faith!

Task for today:  What steps of faith can you take today in preparing your heart for God?
