A Girl Of The Limberlost

Today’s book review is one I have read so many times that I can’t even show you MY book.  The cover is off and the pages dog-eared because it is so well loved.

A Girl Of The Limberlost

This book was written as a sequel to a previous book: Freckles.  Gene Stratton Porter, author and naturalist, wrote a beautiful story.  This is a story about a young girl living in poverty with her widowed mother but happiest when out in nature.  They live in a town in Indiana and she goes to school determined to get an education.  She finds she excels at math and classes on nature.  She is smart and witty and loves the outdoors.

Even though her grieving mother is ignoring her, she has kind neighbors and makes the best of her life.  Eventually, she is reconciled with her mother.

She loves collecting moths and finds out there is a market for them.  She then is able to make some money for her education by catching and selling moths.

Gene Porter has an excellent writing style and I have read a few of her books.  This book is an easy one to sit down and read on a summer day as you watch butterflies in your garden and smell the roses.

There are a few films that came out of this book but I have not watched any of them.  Reading always trumps films in my opinion.  However, that being said, I may have to check some of them out.

Characters are well-developed in this book and in the end, we can learn that hard work and determination help this young sweet girl get the education she really wants.

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:8
