A Christian Home, A Godly Place

I enjoy making our house a home and in one way we do this by changing out our decor.  I will be traveling a lot this fall so I decided to put my fall decor up to coincide with back to school.   I’m reflecting on our home and how I would rather have a godly home. Anyone can make a cute and decorative home that is serene but to build a godly home takes time, love and lots of prayer. I’d like to explore what it takes to rather have a godly home.

We are going to get to know and explore a beautiful old hymn that I enjoy singing. It is built off of a familiar tune; Be Still My Soul. If we can have a godly home, I believe our souls will be serene, at peace and still. Isn’t that a great goal to have?

O give us homes built firm upon the Saviour,
Where Christ is Head, and Counselor and Guide;
Where ev’ry child is taught His love and favor
And gives his heart to Christ, the crucified:
How sweet to know that tho’ his footsteps waver
His faithful Lord is walking by his side!

Simple truths in this first verse. Salvation must be a top priority for our children but then teach them that Christ’s love is so immense and unconditional that they must never be afraid to confess their sins to Him, turn from them with the Holy Spirit’s help and walk a godly path once again.

Isaiah 30:21 reminds us, “This is the way, walk ye in it,…” For myself, as a parent, I am claiming the promise that even when my children wander from their Lord, He is always there to see them walk back to Him. A never changing, never wavering, loving Heavenly Father. I’d rather have a godly home for my children to thrive in.

O give us homes with godly fathers, mothers,
Who always place their hope and trust in Him;
Whose tender patience turmoil never bothers,
Whose calm and courage trouble cannot dim;
A home where each finds joy in serving others,
And love still shines, tho’ days be dark and grim.

I grew up in a Christian home with parents who took us to church, read the Bible to us, taught us the truths in God’s Word and sheltered us from the evil in the world. The gratefulness I have that I was surrounded by God’s love and care throughout my childhood should not go unnoticed. I John 2:19 says, “We love him, because he first loved us.”

This has become such a desire of mine to pass on to my children so that when they leave home they, too, can say they had such a childhood home. We are not perfect parents but we try to lead them back to the Bible for every trial they face and every hurt they endure. I’d rather have a godly home where my children have peace in knowing they are sheltered from evil.

O give us homes where Christ is Lord and Master,
The Bible read, the precious hymns still sung;
Where prayer comes first in peace or in disaster,
And praise is natural speech to ev’ry tongue;
Where mountains move before a faith that’s vaster,
And Christ sufficient is for old and young.

Is praise the first thing that rolls off your tongue when a trial hits your day? I know I can tend to react or overreact when a trial hits instead of immediately turning to the great Friend Who is there to help us always. Reading the 150th Psalm is a great way to praise God. To teach our children to pray first and not worry later is a great tool for them to carry into their adult years.

Helping them to overcome panic, stress and difficulty starts with making sure they are reading their Bible and talking to God on a regular basis. Another way to worship Him is singing. Pick up a hymnal and just start singing your way through the trial. It’s pretty amazing how much peace you’ll find in this task. I’d rather have a godly home where my children are singing with me daily.

O Lord, our God, our homes are Thine forever!
We trust to Thee their problems, toil, and care;
Their bonds of love no enemy can sever
If Thou art always Lord and Master there:
Be Thou the center of our least endeavor:
Be Thou our Guest, our hearts and homes to share.

I’d rather a godly home where Christ is our Lord and Master. If we can put Him first then the enemy doesn’t stand a chance. I want my kids to know that we don’t have to look to the world’s language or ways of dealing with stress and trials to get through our day. We need only to look to His Word and His plan to see that life can be hard but life can be amazing when lived with Christ in our hearts. I’d rather have a godly home where each child knows Christ as their Lord, Savior, Protector, Counselor and Guide.

This song isn’t often sung but I found a rendition of it on YouTube. The words are there for you to follow along. Such a powerful song that we must sing it. Sing with me?
