If you’re like us, weekends fly by and you wake up Monday wondering when if life slowing down. The good news for homeschooling mothers – it does – in the summer – sort of. Mondays for me are recouping from Sundays filled with church and music and seeing people. One thing that is perfect for kids on Mondays in the summer is just taking time to read. I thought I’d share two different books that Mellie and I have enjoyed reading together in the past and how you can get them.
THE COURAGE OF SARAH NOBLE
The theme of “The Courage of Sarah Noble” is conquering fear with knowledge. Sarah’s courage enables her to learn more about the world around her as she travels with her father into new territories to build a new homestead.
The plot of this book is that Sarah and her father are traveling through the wilderness of Connecticut in 1707 to build a new homestead for the family. Sarah comes along to cook and care for her father. He will go back for her family once a home is built. Sarah must stay brave and strong as they travel. This is based on a true story.
This book is great to read on its own or in a school setting like we are doing. Memoria Press has a student guide for them to learn vocabulary from the book and answer questions. It has definitely been a good study and you can purchase it here. Definitely a book to warm the soul.
A NEW COAT FOR ANNA
This book is based on a true story that takes place at the end of World War II. Anna and her mother having survived a long war realizes that Anna’s coat has become too small. With money in short supply the mother goes to many lengths to barter for a new coat for Anna.
What a great story of determination, love and patience on the part of the girl, Anna, as she watched her mother be creative in producing a new coat for her. The ending shows how grateful Anna was to all who helped. A definite great choice for you to read to your children.
