Schooling: It Never Stops

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

The blessed summer vacation is on us right?  Well, it is if you live in the USA.  In fact, most schools have been out close to a month now.  In Canada (where I grew up), school isn’t quite finished yet.  We always started after Labor Day and went until the end of June!

For homeschoolers it can vary so much but I realized today that our schooling never finishes.  Most parents might agree with me on this whether you have your child in a private, public school or teach them at home.

Case in point.

Yesterday, I taught Mellie (she is 10) how to use our bread machine to start bread for lunch.  Then she spent the morning making a cake from scratch on her own.  I wasn’t in the kitchen at all for this.  She did a fabulous job and it tasted great.  She has had many times when she has baked or cooked something where it didn’t turn out quite so well.  However, I used that time to discuss what happened so she could learn and move on.

She is also right now spending her summer days learning and practicing ASL to help me interpret for our deaf at church.  This has impressed me most since she IS only 10 and just picked it up within the past few months.  She usually signs a few of our congregational songs and the greetings from the Pastor as well as some prayers.

Life is full of teaching moments if we allow them to be.  Mellie is always experimenting with new things to craft or new things to discover outside.  She loves the outdoors.  Of course, it is swimming season so we have been in the pool not only playing but talking and she is learning a lot about my childhood and her grandparents’ lives.

Don’t discount the schooling going on each and every day in your home even when a textbook is not propped open!

“Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.” Psalm 127:3
