“And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.” Isaiah 54:13
We’ve been duped in our society today. Most people may be too afraid to say this but I must. So many times we are too afraid to stand up for what we believe in our hearts to be true.
The truth is, from His Word, that the teaching of our children is our responsibility. I won’t get into the history of public schools and what led us to them and where they are today. However, according to God’s Word, we must teach our children.
Does that teaching involve just math, science, and such? No, it is so much more than that. Our children are constantly learning in all their day to day tasks. School is never really done even for us as adults. Our education continues in so many ways.
Yesterday, Mellie and I were both sick with head colds so we watched a baking competition together when we normally would have been doing other activities. Even I learned so many things about pastries and cakes. We learned new terms and I found out that seeing a Swiss Roll cake on a giant screen tv is not good for one’s diet. Okay, so I didn’t cave but it sure looked good!
We both learned that hair that gets knotted is super hard to untangle and thus braids are the best. I spent quite awhile untangling and then braiding her hair.
Another aspect of schooling is learning to shop within a budget. Mellie needed some craft supplies and she learned we can’t just buy everything. Teaching a budget is just as important as teaching them how to multiply.
Home is a place where inventions can be made from the simplest of tasks. Last week we were preparing the pool for the summer season. Her dad had to empty a portion of it and thus a stream was formed in our backyard. Mellie had so much fun with her geese decoys (story for another time how a dear friend gave her Gary and Guinevere). She was a mess when she came in but the smile on her face told me her learning had continued far beyond the school books.
Our time with them is very short. The years go very fast. I want to make sure her schooling is about life, God’s Word and then book knowledge. The subjects we speak of in school should be full of life lessons and taught in a way she remembers them for a lifetime. I found the saying above on Pinterest and it struck me hard. HOME is the most important part in homeschooling or any schooling.
The first institute created by God WAS the home. Why not place more importance on it?
