“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” II Peter 3:18
To quote Noah Webster, grace is “appropriately, the free unmerited love and favour of God, the spring and source of all the benefits men receive from him.” God’s unmerited favor is what we need to have eternal life.
God’s grace took Jesus to the cross for all mankind. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) Jesus sacrificed His life for our eternal security.
Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt!
Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured,
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilled.
God’s grace allowed His only Son to be tortured and humiliated and beaten for all mankind. Our refuge is in the One Who endured the cross, the pain and the suffering, for us. Hebrews 12:2 shows us His love. “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Sin and despair, like the sea waves cold,
Threaten the soul with infinite loss;
Grace that is greater, yes, grace untold,
Points to the refuge, the mighty cross.
God’s grace had Jesus completing the will of His Father in taking the sins of all mankind on Him and paying a debt we could not pay. What grace! What love! “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)
Dark is the stain that we cannot hide.
What can avail to wash it away?
Look! There is flowing a crimson tide,
Brighter than snow you may be today.
God’s unmerited favor showed us that nothing we could do would get us into eternal rest and peace with Him but through Christ’s willing death on the cross. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8, 9) Nothing in my hands I bring. Jesus has paid it all for me.
Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,
Freely bestowed on all who believe!
You that are longing to see His face,
Will you this moment His grace receive?
Do you know His grace? If not, come to the cross and find grace for your soul for all eternity. John 1:12 gives us good news. “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that will pardon and cleanse within;
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that is greater than all our sin.
