Your Children Can Serve God Now

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;” (Colossians 3:23)

As children we want to grow up so we can do things. We can’t wait to be able to babysit or drive a car or go shopping with friends. We always want to get to that next stage of life thinking that then we will be able to do more.

I’m so grateful that my parents taught me from an early age that when it comes to serving Jesus, when it comes to bringing gifts to Him, there is no age deference. Anyone at any age can give to God.

It all starts in the home where we have taught our children that even picking up trash left on the floor is serving God. Why? Any time we serve others we are bringing glory to Him. Joy in serving others!

The older I got as a child, the more I could do in the church and I loved it. As a teen I taught Sunday School, worked in Jr Church and the nursery, sang, played the piano and my clarinet and helped on the bus. We cleaned the church and visited nursing homes, too. This carried on into my married life as Pierre and I served in whatever church we were in. It became apparent to us that this desire to serve, to bring our talents to the Savior, was because of the habits we formed as children.

So when your child asks how they can serve God being so young, give them a garbage bag to pick up trash around the church. Ask them to straighten the hymnals or pass out the bulletin to visitors. There is always something they can do and it starts with them understanding that their heart belongs to their Savior. Their praise can be given in many ways to Him Who saved them. Their talents no matter how small they may be can be used to worship God. Whether they are helping around the house, in the church or in the community, serving others is a talent any child has.

“As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” (I Peter 4:10)

The wise may bring their learning,
The rich may bring their wealth,
And some may bring their brilliance,
And some bring strength and health;
We too, would bring our treasures
To offer to the King;
We have no gifts deserving:
What shall we children bring?

We’ll bring Him hearts that love Him;
We’ll bring Him thankful praise,
And young souls meekly striving
To walk in holy ways:
And these shall be our treasures
We offer to the King,
And these are gifts that even
The youngest child may bring.

We’ll come and show the Savior
The things we do each day;
We’ll try our best to please Him
At home, at school or play:
And better are these treasures
To offer to our King,
Than richest gifts without them:
Yet these a child may bring.
