Is it almost the end of May already? Where has time gone? As we fly towards the end of the month with the summer upon us, I can’t help but think that while school is drawing to a close for most, the summer will be anything but quiet. Our family has a lot on our plates for the next couple of months and I can see myself not being quiet in my soul if I do not set up some safeguards. We have church activities and work related things to do. We have some trips to plan and camps to go to. Life is going to be busy and sometimes as a chronic pain sufferer this means feeling a little anxious.

Worry has a tendency to creep in when we least expect it. Have you noticed that it can come upon us at the strangest times and for the littlest of reasons. Instead of giving in to these moments of worry, we need to live in the quiet moments of life and embrace the peace we have in God.

Let’s look at another definition of quiet. Calm; not agitated by wind; as a quiet sea or atmosphere. Have you been to or on the ocean when it is calm? Or have you been on a lake that is quiet, serene and not a ripple in sight? This is the calm we need in our souls when thoughts of worry creep in. Quiet can come when we spend time in the Word and I can help with that if you read this article. I have the best mother who has always given such an exemplary quiet in the times of storm. The year we lost my father (her husband of 50+ years), my mom also lost a dear lady in their church. My mom has always been a compassionate and giving pastor’s wife and nothing seems to ruffle her. I kept checking in on her to see if she was okay and she was. She has been such a source of strength to so many and her example is one I look to. She would say that her strength lies in God and the upbringing she had in her life. Her mom’s favorite Psalm (121) says it all.
I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.
This would be the perfect psalm to keep close by when those moments of disquiet come into our lives.

Another definition of quiet is: smooth; unruffled. If you look at the word unruffled you will see it means emotionally calm. I just love looking at words and their meanings. Emotionally calm says so much to me. When life creeps in and things happen, we can be unruffled. This is definitely a word I’d use to describe my mom and one I’ve tried to live by. I’ve probably told the kids hundreds of times, “we don’t cry over spilled milk”. I don’t always succeed in an unruffled life but it’s such a good goal to have. II Corinthians 4:8 says, “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair.” I think that peace in the home comes when the mom is unruffled. Quiet times are unruffled times. We can be troubled, but our outward being can show calmness and peace.
So, as this month comes to an end, I would highly recommend that when those worries, frustrations and moments of agitation come into our lives, let’s live in the Word! You can find so much strength in His Word. Read this passage from Paul on how he found peace in so many storms.
