What will my children remember as they become adults? I hope they will remember the history I have been teaching them and talking about for years. Why? History needs to be learned so we do not repeat past mistakes and problems.
History is a fascinating subject because of the “people-watching” you get to do. I like to observe people and see how they act, live and what they think. I find it fascinating and so interesting. I’m blessed to have been raised in a home with a father who taught me to love history. He knew so very much about every era of history and we loved quizzing him on dates and events.
God also found history very important. He was always hoping the children of Israel would learn from past generations. God was always encouraging them to teach their children history. Psalm 78:4 says this, “We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.”
What history are we teaching our children? Are we teaching them the truth not only from God’s Word but what really happened in our world or are we teaching the liberal teachings that remove God from history and the world around us. We were created by God and for His glory.
We have a wonderful and rich history to declare of how He has led not only His people (children of Israel) but all those who called upon His name. Has there been wars, famine, hard times and difficult situations? Absolutely! Has He led us still? Yes! He keeps His children and reminds us that we are only here temporarily as we travel to Heaven.
How precious is Psalm 32:8 when the psalmist reminds us, “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” History is God’s story and even though there are times of pain and suffering, we can remind ourselves the best is yet to come.
I hope my children remember the history they have learned and teach it to their children but most importantly I hope they continually lean on the One Who created the world we live in and remember He cares for them and will lead them in their lives.
