What hobbies do you find enjoyable?
One that I enjoy doing is sewing.
Sometimes I sew simple things like napkins. We have saved so much money just by switching to napkins I have made. They are fun and you can fit them to the holiday you’re celebrating.
I also enjoy making things for Mellie. For her 8th birthday, I made her a circle skirt (and one for doll). Circle skirts use a bit of math but I’ve learned how to plan a pattern and I really enjoy making them. It doesn’t take long to sew these skirts and you can add a waistband to make a smoother look or do a simple elastic waist. I also sewed a matching doll skirt.
When you sew your own clothes, you can choose fabrics that fit your exact personality or situation. For this skirt, I chose a navy blue with white dots fabric. I’m so excited how this turned out in part because she had a skirt similar to this when she was little and I was so sad when she grew out of it. I didn’t make the original little skirt but had found it while thrifting and it was from the Gap. I’m so glad I could reproduce the skirt again for her 8th birthday.
My homemade one turned out as gorgeous as the one she had from the Gap. It took only about an hour to sew and she loves it. I usually make her cute nightgowns and like in this picture, I added some lace to the ruffles.
Of course, seasons are so fun because I can quickly sew a covering for my coffee bar and change it out at whim. Snoopy is the decor of choice these days so I love being able to find Snoopy fabric online.
This hobby has taken hold with all my girls and they like to sew. Melanie sewed her first tote bag this week and while I gave her directions here and there, for the most part I just let her go for it and have fun. Stephanie (17) has gotten quite good with her sewing by following videos online. She made this laptop cover and even quilted it this week.
For me, this is one of the best things about homeschooling and having my children around all the time. I get to not only see their finished creations but watch them go through the process. Helping them do their best and see the end results, is such a good feeling.
