The Call of Abraham (Child’s Devotional)

“Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came. And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land. And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him. And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the Lord, and called upon the name of the Lord. And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.” Genesis 12:1-9

Abram’s story begins with a promise
God made him the father of a great nation
The journey he started on with his wife
Would lead him to a new country in God’s beautiful creation.

Imagine in Bible times when it came time for a long journey.  They would have to walk or ride on animals.  Imagine how big a journey it would be just to go a few hundred miles.  God asked Abram to step out on faith and go to a country he had never even heard of.  God promised Abram that He would make a great nation out of the descendants of Abram.

Did Sarai and Abram have children?  No, not yet but “…he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.” (Genesis 15:6)  So Abram and his wife, Sarai and all their servants, animals and possessions left Ur and started their journey.  They had a long journey with some trials and tests but God did give them a son in their old age.

God also changed their names to Abraham and Sarah when He made a covenant with them.   “As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.” (Genesis 17:4)  God gave them the land of Canaan as an inheritance and Abraham became the father not only of Isaac but of the mighty nation of Israel as well.  Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born.  God had fulfilled His promise to Abraham and Abraham was patient in waiting.  Our God never fails us.  He keeps His promises to us and loves us enough to give us the very best.
