Family Habits

What habits do you have? Your family? With the summertime almost here; it can be a time of boredom for some kids and hair pulling for parents. Having the habit of some things will help take the boredom out of the summer and give the parents some peace. First we have to suggest that whatever the habit you have, ask yourself if it is godly, orderly and a good example to your children. “Let all things be done decently and in order.” (I Corinthians 14:40)

Daily Bible Reading

This is a great and best habit to instill in your children. Starting their day in the Word of God gives them a solid foundation and will get their day started properly. Only 10% of people read the Bible within a seven day period! That’s not even daily. Considering that 31% of the world population say they are Christian this seems like a broad number of Christians do not meet daily with God. Teaching the children young can give them a stability in their life of WHO to turn to when life gets difficult. Need help deciding what to have them read? You could start with a devotional book for children. Here is a good one.

Chores

Yes, having your children do daily chores is a great habit to start this summer and carry on into the school year. Showing them that everyone can pitch in to keep the house they live in clean is a great habit to set them up with for their adult life. Our children each have specific jobs they do each day and the house stays clean even with six people living in it! Pop on over and you won’t likely find us scrambling to hide clutter under the couches and beds. This also makes for a peaceful home.

Reading

Are they still bored? Teach them to love reading and you’ll have a kid that spends the summer continuing his education through the joy of book reading!

Outdoor Play

You cannot go wrong by getting your children in the habit of playing outdoors and exploring God’s creation. There are so many creative outlets for them when they get outside and the best way for them to get a good dose of Vitamin D is to be out there exploring the bugs, leaves and trees.
So much of our time is spent on technology nowadays that isn’t all bad but if we can grab the attention of our children to develop habits that are less about their noses in social media and more focused on other people or activities, then you’ll see them blossom and mature. Family habits that we can show them by example.
