April showers bring May flowers but to me they show God’s grace.
That He’s given us a world of beauty in spite of our disgrace.
Sin now mars this world we live in and lives in our hearts, too.
When we accept His freeing salvation we can have a song that is new.
Now we see the beauty around us in quite a different light.
His love, His care and His creation can bring a great delight.
Music brings healing, gives joy and even convicts at times if we listen to the words we are singing. I’m talking about sacred music this month because that is the majority of what I listen to on a day to day basis. However, for me, it isn’t about the melody or the harmony around the song but rather the words that convict. Words that grip my mind and soul and help me find peace, love, joy, etc for any situation in life. I may be stating the obvious but music is written in poem form and then musical notes added to it. I love poetry as my grandfather Moir did and I enjoy writing it. Case in point is the poem at the beginning of this post. I wanted to look at this poem today and discuss how it can grip our souls.

“He hath made every thing beautiful in his time:…” The writer of Ecclesiastes (3:11), Solomon, had it correct when he reminded us that the Creator of the Universe makes things beautiful and in His time. Our God never does things half-heartily or slapped together but rather He gives His best. Looking at the world around us, He gave us so much more beauty than we deserved. Our disgrace, our sin, deserves the ugliness of hell not the beauty that is in heaven.
Sin now mars this world we live in and lives in our hearts, too.

I have good news for you, news that we can even put into a song. This news is that our sin does not have to condemn us to the ugliness of hell. We can enjoy an eternity in the beauty of heaven simply by recognizing we are unworthy of a perfect heaven and unable to get into heaven by any amount of good works we may think we are doing on earth. Our sins condemn us to hell but God didn’t leave us hopeless. God sent His only Son into the world to die for our sins. When Christ went to the cross so many years ago, He was dying for our sins (past, present and future) and assuring us a place in heaven. We have to realize that the gift of life is free and there is nothing we can do ourselves to get to heaven. Our gift of eternal life is free when we call on His name and confess we are indeed sinners in need of a Savior. He gladly, yes joyfully, comes into our hearts and stands for us between a holy God as payment for our sins. I John 2:2 says it best. “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” That big word, propitiation, means atoning sacrifice offered to God to appease His wrath and showing His mercy in accepting Christ’s sacrifice for us. Something to sing about, right?
Now we see the beauty around us in quite a different light.
His love, His care and His creation can bring a great delight.
Oh how wonderful it is when we accept Christ’s atonement for our sins. How different, then, this world looks to us. How our soul is gripped with gratefulness for our wonderful salvation and we now have a new song in our hearts. The Psalmist said it the best in Psalms 40:3. “And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.” Praise Him, praise Him, tell of His excellent greatness. This is a great song and just will burst forth out of your heart when you know Him and walk with Him daily.
Let’s have godly music that spreads a gratefulness for all He has done for us!
