“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13
When I was a little girl, my mom said I went around the house singing and holding my doll. Songs matter to me. Words matter to me. Hymns are my favorite especially the old ones. This hymn is one I learned quickly as a little girl because the words are so repetitious. I went about the house boldly singing, “There’s not a friend like the lowly Jesus, no, not one! No, not one!”
At 5, I didn’t know exactly all that this entailed but I believe God put that song into my heart to help me as I grew older. Years passed by and I learned just how close a friend Jesus was/is to me. The first cure I had came at the age of 12 when I realized my heart was sinful and I needed Jesus’ saving blood to cleanse it. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” (Romans 10:9)
When our soul is diseased we are in a state or feeling of hopelessness. We are sad, depressed, and alone but are we? Not if we remember the friendship we have in Jesus. I love the Psalms and in 42:5 we are reminded, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.” Our soul needs only to hope in God!
There’s not a friend like the lowly Jesus–
No, not one! no, not one!
None else could heal all our soul’s diseases–
No, not one! no, not one!
Friendship is something all of us desire and to have Him as a friend means not only do we have God to lean on but we have holiness right near us and He will always be ready to give us THE best answer to all of our struggles. “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; ” I Peter 1:5 reminds us that we can be holy in all areas of our lives just like Christ was.
No friend like Him is so high and holy,
No, not one! No, not one!
And yet no friend is so meek and lowly,
No, not one! No, not one!
Is your day difficult? Are you just sure that every moment is going to be more tragic than the last? We have a Friend for those moments and we have no need to be unhappy even during the difficult times. We can be assured of peace throughout our whole day. John 14:27 says it all. “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you:…”
There’s not an hour that He is not near us,
No, not one! No, not one!
No night so dark but His love can cheer us,
No, not one! No, not one!
Psalm 48:14, “For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.” Guided by God, we have nothing to fear. Our humble friend, Jesus, will be there for us and He will be our guide day by day ’til we reach heaven’s shore.
