“But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.” Psalms 40:17
I bought this book on a whim because, well, it’s about WWII. I loved it. It was a quick read that made me think deeper about how the “other side” suffered during and after WWII.
We think a lot about the countries that were decimated by Hitler and his cronies. We don’t think enough about the ordinary Germans caught up in a destroyed country after WWI and looking for a leader to bring their country back to economic success.
This book tells their stories and how the Americans went in after WWII and helped them survive a couple of winters. We defeated the foes. The German people rose from the ashes to succeed. We gave them hope that a better day would be coming for their country. Germany hasn’t been without their continuing struggles as Russia tried to take over their nation after the war but they did get to see a very good side of Americans. They saw and felt the care Americans were willing to give them to alleviate their suffering.
One such American was Uncle Wiggly-Wings, Lt. Gail Halvorsen. He saw a need and met it in ways even he didn’t believe was possible and it all started with two sticks of gum. Without giving the book away, the spirit of Americans shines through. American soldiers supplying the needs of a country they had just defeated. God bless America!
A great book to read and read with your children so they can learn that humanity matters no matter which side of the battle you are on. Find it here.
