I have always enjoyed as an adult going back to read again the books I enjoyed in my childhood. Today I thought it would be fun to review series and learn about it’s author. I also reference another series about a nurse here.
SUE BARTON SERIES
This is one of the series I read as a teen and had me thinking of the grandeurs of nursing. Sue is studying to be a nurse and oh the adventures she has. It is a fun series to read even as an adult when you just want to relax and get lost in a fun story.
The series was written by Helen Dore Boylston and I had so much fun reading about her that I have to share a quick biography.
Born in 1895, in New Hampshire, Helen’s nickname was Troubs (short for trouble). She studied nursing and sailed to France to work in WWI. She reached the rank of Captain and after the war stayed behind in Europe to continue with her nursing. It was here she met Rose Wilder Lane (recognize the name? That’s right, this was Laura and Almanzo’s daughter) and they became long lasting friends.
They lived in Paris and then Albania with the goal of both becoming writers. They had some glorious adventures. In 1928, they returned to America and shared a home on the property of the Wilders. The Depression left Bolyston losing much in the way of investments so she did return to nursing for awhile. She published the Sue Barton series and a few other books. She lived til she was 89 and died of dementia leaving no known relatives.
The adventures of Sue are said to be loosely based on her but when asked about it she laughed and said she only wished she would have had those adventures. Still, can you imagine the adventures she had during WWI and the things she saw and felt? God bless all who served this country and others through the horrors of war.
You can buy her series by googling it online but you can also find it here. A list of books in the series is as follows:
