When is your quietest time of the day? Early morning is when I have my quiet time. It’s so nice to have quiet before the children get up and the day gets busy and loud.
In a world full of media frenzies and work styles that insist we be busy from morning until night, it is often hard to find those quiet moments. To be quiet means we have to be listening to the Holy Spirit and His leading and that just might prove scary, right? It doesn’t have to be and it might prove healing if we took some time to be apart and be quiet. What will we learn of ourselves and how will we learn it?
Quiet time = reflection thru prayer
One way to enjoy quiet time is to spend it in prayer. Prayer is defined as: in worship, a solemn address to the Supreme Being, consisting of adoration, or an expression of our sense of God’s glorious perfections, confession of our sins, supplication for mercy and forgiveness, intercession for blessings on others, and thanksgiving, or an expression of gratitude to God for his mercies and benefits. (Webster’s 1828) This definition covers much of what we can pray for and if we’d spend time praising God for Who He is, then we’d have such a blessed quiet time. Reflect on your Lord and bask in His goodness.
Psalms 103:2 “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:”
Quiet time = leaning of the Holy Spirit
What is the job of the Holy Spirit? He is there to comfort, guide and direct us in our lives. Are you struggling with a trial? Talk to the Holy Spirit. Did you find out a close relative has left this earth? Ask Him for comfort. That name you can’t remember? He will help you there, too. There isn’t anything too little or too big that He can’t handle.
John 14:26 “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
Quiet time = growth thru His Word
It is said that the vast majority of Christians do not read their Bibles consistently. This sounds so foreign to me because it is something that I do daily. If we can eat daily, we can read our Bibles daily. How can we have peace to do so? Where do we start if we’ve gotten off kilter? Start by reading one verse. Then go to a chapter. I personally like journaling my thoughts but I’ve also come to love writing whole books of the Bible out in my journal. I can go verse by verse really meditating. If we want real quiet time we need to get into the Word for it will quiet our souls.
Matthew 6:6 “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”
A personal relationship with God doesn’t come from Him alone. This is a two way street. We have to get ahold of God through salvation and then just have daily talks with Him. We need to keep close attention as we build this relationship to the leaning of the Holy Spirit and then use our quiet times to grow stronger in Him.
