Does the public schools recognize fall? Do they change classes each season? I know they change bulletin boards etc. but the beauty in homeschooling is that every season we are discovering new classes.
This season’s class is hiking through the trails around the area as well as running through the autumn leaves.
How is this a class?
The world (yes, including education) thinks linear. One goal, one line; book learning. Of course over the years sports have also become a major course of money, um, I mean education. Music is a debatable class since some school districts have cut back on the arts. However, the majority of a student’s day is spent sitting at a desk NOT in movement.
In homeschooling, I have the wonderful privilege of making sure Melanie’s textbook learning is accomplished before 9:30 in the morning.
She then practices her violin while I listen on and encourage her.
After this, she knows that chores must be done (home economics class) and this is done with great fervor and movement. Later on in the day, our fall course (P.E.) is going to be removing leaves off the property!
There is so much to be learned from the wonders of jumping in a pile of leaves to observing all the little creatures running around our yard. We also take time to look at the leaves and discern their different sizes and colors. What a beautiful world we live in.
I have developed a greater sense over my years of homeschooling in how best to educate my children. I can see now that the world doesn’t have a clue what they are doing and even the private schools have it all wrong.
Life lessons need to be developed much more than book learning. Book learning is something that I, personally, love to do but I also see now the bigger value in teaching my children how to accomplish their chores, learn an instrument, shop for groceries as well as take care of the home God has given us. And here is a fall recipe we love to make together!
