Melanie is having this leisurely summer (in the midst of her mom packing). I’m enjoying watching her activities and seeing what she is learning.
Tuesday, she spent a bunch of time outside finding as many baby lizards as possible. Apparently, it’s “baby lizard” season. She was running around looking in our trees and bushes. When she found one she would catch them, name them and show them to us. At one point it got kind of wild when she walked over to show me and it jumped from her finger to my chair. I may have screamed! But in all seriousness, they are kind of cute and harmless.
Yesterday, Mellie worked hard to make our lunch. She created chicken alfredo with mushrooms. It was amazing! With packing up our home, I have tasked my cooks to use things from the pantry more often than not. It has been fun seeing the creations they come up with. The creativity in the kitchen knows no bounds!
Last night, I watched her at church where she signed the song service for me. On Wednesday nights, I have been playing the piano for the song service and so she has been signing and interpreting that portion of our evening. She has amazed me with how quickly she has picked up the language. I learned ASL over 30 years ago and hadn’t signed in about 25. I have been relearning it slowly but surely. The child picked it up much more quickly and I love watching her.
As we continue with our summer, I’m sure she will learn so much more that are not in the textbooks. She was glad to see the textbooks go into a box and while I miss them, I know she is still learning so much.
Spend the summer creating moments for your children to learn. They don’t need to recognize it as education. You can have fun with these moments.
