Movie Time Becomes Memories of Education

“And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.” Ecclesiastes 3:13

The older I get the less movies I watch.  It seems I need a short episode or else my attention span goes off the rails. That being said, I have watched two movies this week.  The joys of summer vacation and hot hot Florida means you find an inside activity.

Mellie asked me to watch National Treasure on Monday and then yesterday the girls and I watched National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

Summer vacation can be difficult on moms even of homeschoolers.  Routines are lax and children claim boredom more easily.

I don’t mind some boredom in children because it forces them to get creative.  I usually tell my children, if you’re bored I have a job for you.  That gets them out of their rut and finding something creative quite quickly.

The movies we watched were interesting and I found myself looking up facts and discussing them with Stephanie.

While there are a lot of dumb movies out there, I think that there are so many good ones that can teach us things, too.

One of my fondest memories growing up without a television is my mom renting a huge projector from the library.  Usually during a winter holiday season, she would get the projector and we’d pick out films.  Keep in mind these films were on huge rolls!  We’d carry out a few big bags of them and take them home.

Our holiday would be spent loading these big reels onto the projector, popping popcorn and watching all kinds of good classic movies.  It was special.

The advent of TV everywhere has lessened the specialness of these times.  Our family tries to hold on to the special times by making movie nights with special themes.  The girls love planning the snacks and decor around them.

Whether you pop in a movie on a hot summer afternoon or plan an evening of it, find a way to make it special.  Keep the education in the film (lightly) and take an interest in what your children do.

Just because school is “finished” never means education is complete.

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” Psalm 133:1
