Joseph In Canaan (Book Excerpt)

School isn’t always the basic subjects taught at a desk.  I think you understand that now from me. Today, I’m sharing an except from a child’s devotional book.  I wrote this to encourage children to learn the stories of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation.  It is important as parents that we not only set the example and let them see us reading ours but to teach them to read theirs as well.

Genesis 37 – 47

Joseph, grandson of Isaac, loved God
He served Him with his whole heart.
His brothers were jealous and sold him
Into slavery thinking evil to impart.

Isaac’s son, Jacob had 12 sons and of these sons there was one who was his favorite, Joseph.  Do you remember the dreams Joseph had?  Dreams in which God showed him his older brothers would bow down to him?  He told his brothers about these dreams and they hated him.  They hated him so much so that they sold him as a slave and sent him away from their home.

Joseph ended up in Egypt.

He worked hard and yet still ended up in prison because of a wicked woman. While in prison he was able to interpret some dreams and eventually was brought before Pharaoh to have the king’s dream interpreted.  God was with Joseph and let him know that a big famine was coming that would spread over several countries.  Joseph had a plan to help the people of Egypt not starve.

Pharaoh was so impressed he said, “… Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art:  Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou.  And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.”  (Genesis 41:39-41)

Joseph put his plan in place and spared the lives of the Egyptians from starvation as well as people from other countries.  His brothers came to buy grain in Egypt and soon discovered the brother they sold into slavery was now second in command of the country of Egypt.  God knew Joseph would be used to save the lives of his brothers.  God allowed the trials Joseph went through to make not only his faith strong but to save his family as well.

Task for today:  What is something difficult you have had to do?

This is just one of the devotionals in the book which you can find here.  Teach your children to love God’s Word so they will turn to it for guidance and not the world.
