“And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God.” Psalm 40:3
Do you like to sing? When I’m having a tough day, I like to sing. When I wake up to sunshine and energy to work, I love to sing. Singing means a lot to me but more so the words that I’m singing. God can put a song in our hearts no matter what the day is like. The best thing about singing is it can become our prayer to God, our worship about Him or just our praise for Who He is.
“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;” (Ephesians 5:19) The Bible talks a lot about singing. It is such an uplifting activity and you don’t have to have perfect pitch in order to do it. “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.” (Psalm 100:1) Lift up your heart to God, sing a hymn and keep the melody in your heart all day.

There’s within my heart a melody
Jesus whispers sweet and low,
Fear not, I am with thee; peace, be still,
In life’s constant ebb and flow.
Luther Bridgers was a minister’s son who became a minister himself. He and his wife, Sarah had three sons. When he was just 27 years old, his wife and sons were killed in a house fire while visiting family. He wrote this song after this tragedy (time frame unknown as to how long after) but do you think he had reason NOT to have a melody in his heart?
God assured him that no matter the trial, He was by Luther’s side. He did later marry again and became an evangelist as well as penning more hymns. He is best known, though for this song about how God kept him singing. If he can sing why can’t we? “Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him…” (Psalm 105:2)
