This book is one I’ve read and that made a lot of impact on me. Written by a Lithuanian Jew named Sarah Shimonovitz, it tells the tale of Jewish Lithuanians in WWII. I haven’t read much about the Jewish populations in the smaller countries surrounding Russia and Germany so this caught my attention.
Vilna was a place that was fought over by many during modern times. Lithuania finally gained its independence around 1991.
This story gives us a first hand account of being a Jew in Lithuania during WWII. They lost so much yet remained grateful for so little. Sarah’s life was remarkable and her strength to endure laudable. This book definitely has me not wanting to put it down. The history learned will be forever etched into my mind. We will never comprehend what people suffer in wars unless we have walked their path.
You can find the book here. We will never understand the horrors these Jews suffered during WWII, the Holocaust that filled them with terror yet resolve to survive but we can remain ever thankful for the military, the men and women, that fought hard to resist German tyranny and free us from the evil that was Hitler and the Third Reich. I’m learning more and more that the fight wasn’t only soldiers but resistance fighters who helped in so many towns and countries to bring the freedom we enjoy today.
Let us never forget the sacrifices made. So many suffered and died because of evil men wanting to rule the world. This world will never know peace until Christ lives in the hearts of men and women. We must remind people of His love and hope that they can know true liberty in Him.
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” Galatians 5:1
